🚢 Recovery Teams and Ships
After the Crew Module re-enters Earth’s atmosphere and splashes down in the Bay of Bengal, a meticulously coordinated recovery operation begins. This phase involves specially trained teams, naval ships, helicopters, and support vessels to ensure the safe extraction of astronauts.
- Indian Navy Collaboration: The Indian Navy plays a lead role in maritime recovery operations, deploying ships, divers, and helicopters to locate and retrieve the Crew Module.
- Naval Recovery Ships: Equipped with cranes, tracking gear, medical facilities, and crew-receiving platforms, these ships are stationed near the splashdown zone during descent.
- Helicopter Support: Naval and Coast Guard helicopters provide aerial tracking of the falling module and assist in rapid crew extraction if needed.
- Divers & Flotation Teams: Trained naval divers and support teams secure the Crew Module in the sea, check structural integrity, and assist astronauts in exiting the capsule safely.
- Post-Recovery Medical Team: Medical specialists on board perform immediate health assessments and stabilize the astronauts before transporting them to a facility on land.
- Sea Trials and Mock Exercises: Multiple dry runs and simulations have been conducted using dummy modules to prepare teams for every possible recovery scenario.
This carefully rehearsed recovery strategy ensures the mission does not end at splashdown — but with a smooth return of India’s astronauts, safe and secure.
