👨‍🚀 Training & Astronauts
Gaganyaan’s success depends not only on engineering excellence but also on the rigorous preparation of India’s first astronauts—officially referred to as Vyomanauts. ISRO, in collaboration with international partners, has ensured comprehensive training that meets global standards of human spaceflight.
- Astronaut Selection: Initially, four Indian Air Force pilots were shortlisted from a pool of candidates based on physical, psychological, and technical assessments.
- Training in Russia: These astronauts underwent a year-long training program at Russia’s Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, covering weightlessness, emergency drills, flight simulation, and space environment survival.
- Indian Training Facilities: ISRO has developed astronaut training modules in India, including simulation labs, pressure chambers, and neutral buoyancy pools for spacewalk practice.
- Health & Endurance Training: Intensive physical conditioning, stress testing, and medical evaluations prepare astronauts to handle G-forces and zero-gravity conditions.
- Mission-Specific Training: This includes Crew Module familiarity, communication protocols, and contingency handling for re-entry and landing scenarios.
These selected astronauts will be India’s pioneers in space, representing years of dedication and symbolizing national pride and scientific ambition.
