🧬 Astronaut Selection

The selection of astronauts for the Gaganyaan mission was a meticulous process led by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in coordination with the Indian Air Force (IAF). It focused on identifying candidates who demonstrate exceptional physical, psychological, and technical capabilities.

  • Initial Screening: Hundreds of experienced IAF test pilots were considered. Candidates underwent preliminary medical checks and physical fitness assessments.
  • Psychological Evaluation: Stress tolerance, decision-making skills, and cognitive performance were tested under simulated mission conditions.
  • Medical Fitness: Comprehensive health checks were performed at the Institute of Aerospace Medicine in Bengaluru, ensuring candidates met international spaceflight standards.
  • Final Shortlisting: Four candidates were selected based on their outstanding overall performance. All of them are highly trained fighter pilots with advanced technical knowledge and flight experience.
  • Confidentiality & Security: Due to national interest and mission sensitivity, their identities were initially kept confidential and later revealed by official sources.

These chosen astronauts represent the next chapter in India’s space legacy — selected not just for their qualifications, but for their resilience, discipline, and commitment to national service.
